Long Distance Puppy Transport

Transporting a puppy to another part of NZ can be tricky to navigate – and I’m talking about the research side of things! Below are the three options that we have used.

We recommend you check the refund policy before booking, just in case (rare and unlikely event) a problem is picked up at the vet check.

Flying Puppy

This can be done two ways. Puppy can travel alone or accompanied.

We are happy to get your puppy to the airport.

If the puppy is flying alone, you need to book through an approved pet transporter. Although this is usually the most expensive option, the puppy has a fast journey and virtually all the work is done for you after filling out the form. More information, including a list of approved transporters, can be found here.

If you want to collect your puppy and fly back with it, puppy travels back as your luggage. In this case you do your own booking. The advantage of this method is that puppy gets to spend some time with you while we are around, so by the time you get Puppy home he already knows you a little. The disadvantage is that it is probably going to be a full day out for you. You also need to get an approved pet carrier to us if you want your puppy to get used to it before the flight. This can be done by ordering one online and having it posted to us – make sure it meets the Air NZ requirements specified on their information page (link below). There is an extra pet carriage fee to pay when you check your puppy in ($120:00 as of June 2025). Full and updated details for accompanying you puppy can be found here.

Pet Transporter – Overland.

You can arrange to have your pet picked up and driven to you. This involves both you and us meeting the pet transporter at approved points along the route at prearranged times, to drop off and pick up puppy. We are happy to get the puppy to the nearest pet drop-off for both A4dibble Pet Transport and Pet Bus (there may be others, but we have used these two and know their route). The advantage to this option is that it is usually the cheapest option. The disadvantage is that the puppy might have a long journey.
